What Exactly is Hyaluronic Acid?

Let’s talk dermatology! Hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastic fibers are all part of the connective tissue, also known as the extra-cellular matrix, which forms the structure of the skin. In the early 90s, we tried to inject collagen of bovine origin, but this all changed towards the end of the 90s with the introduction of hyaluronic acid of bacterial origin manufactured in the laboratory. Hyaluronic acid therefore plays an important role in supporting the dermis, making it an essential component of the skin, as well as hydrating the dermis.

As we age, our production of hyaluronic acid diminishes, leading to a loss of skin volume and dehydration. Wrinkles, fine lines and furrows are the result. Hence the importance of injecting hyaluronic acid into the different layers of the skin.

We don’t inject wrinkles, we restore volume and hydration. Recreating volume, rehydrating the skin to give you back the look your face had a few years ago.

Cheekbones

Appearance of deepening furrows around the mouth and jowls that damage the oval of the face. Correction by enhancing the lost volume of the cheekbones, filling in the furrows and correcting the oval of the face with a filler.

Dark circles

Loss of volume and black discoloration under the eyes, giving you that tired look when you're not. Filler injection to restore lost volume.

Lips

Symbol of a woman's beauty. Plumping lips with filling agents. Immediate effect that lasts 8-10 months.

Chin

Loss of volume with age. Restore lost chin volume to reveal the harmony of the lost profile. All without surgery, with filler injection only.

Is the treatment painful and how long does it last?

Hyaluronic acid injection treatment can be slightly painful, but the sensation varies from person to person. The pain associated with injection depends on several factors, such as individual sensitivity, the area treated, the injection technique used and the practitioner’s experience.

Some patients may feel a slight stinging or pressure sensation during injection. In many cases, practitioners apply a local anesthetic cream or use techniques to minimize discomfort, such as using very fine needles or combining hyaluronic acid with a local anesthetic.

After the injection, you may experience slight tenderness, redness or swelling in the treated area, but this should normally disappear quickly.

It’s important to discuss your pain concerns with Dr. Sakellarides. He will be able to give you specific information about what to expect and take steps to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Can you be allergic to hyaluronic acid?

A medical examination by a specialist in aesthetic medicine will put your mind at rest.

Hyaluronic acid is safe and has been used by millions of aesthetic physicians every day for over 25 years.

What's the difference between dermal fillers and Botox®?

Filling agents, such as hyaluronic acid injections, are used to add volume to certain areas of the face. They can fill in wrinkles and folds, increase lip volume or reshape certain facial features. Fillers are generally used to treat static lines and wrinkles, i.e. those that are present even when the facial muscles are at rest. They can also be used to restore volume lost through aging.

Botox®, on the other hand, is a botulinum toxin that is injected into facial muscles to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which form when muscles contract during facial expressions. Botox® works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction, allowing the muscles to relax. This helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines caused by repeated facial expressions, such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and wrinkles between the eyebrows.

During the treatment, small amounts of hyaluronic acid are injected into specific areas of the face to restore lost volume. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, which helps hydrate the skin and give it a plumper appearance.

Commonly treated areas with hyaluronic acid include wrinkles around the mouth (nasolabial folds, marionette lines), lips (lip augmentation, contour definition), cheeks, chin, jawline, and under-eye hollows.

The treatment can be slightly uncomfortable, but practitioners often use techniques to minimize discomfort, such as applying a topical anesthetic cream or using fine needles. Pain sensitivity varies from person to person.

The duration of effects varies depending on several factors, including the type of product used, the treated area, and individual metabolism. In general, results last from 12 to 18 months. Follow-up sessions are necessary to maintain the effects.

Common side effects are usually mild and temporary, such as redness, bruising, slight swelling, or tenderness in the treated area. Applying ice is usually sufficient to alleviate these side effects. They typically fade within days after the treatment.

Certain medical conditions and medications may contraindicate the treatment. It is important to discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking with your practitioner before undergoing the treatment.

Most people can resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment. However, it is possible to experience slight sensitivity or bruising in the treated area. It is recommended to avoid excessive sun exposure, cold temperatures, or intense physical activities in the first few days following the treatment.

The primary goal of hyaluronic acid treatment is to achieve natural-looking results by enhancing the volume and hydration of the skin. An experienced practitioner will use appropriate techniques to achieve a harmonious result tailored to your needs.
